NASA to buy 10,240-processor supercomputer from SGI
Silicon Graphics Inc. yesterday announced its second large supercomputer sale in as many weeks, a 10,240-processor system that will be used by NASA for space exploration and global warming research.
This NASA system is a very-large-node cluster, made up of 512-processor systems with shared memory and a single instance of the Linux operating system. Those 512-processor systems are connected with InfiniBand.
This SGI-built Altix supercomputer will be housed at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., and will be built with Itanium 2 processors from Intel Corp.
