Will a router stop a trojan on my computer from send out data?

From what I read my free version of Zone Alarm will do this.

However, the technician from-Link told me that with my router I did NOT need Zone Alarm. Your router has its own built-in firewall, he said. OK. I know that my router will assign a different IP # (than my ISP assigns) which is what the internet will see.

But IS the router also designed to stop such a trojan or does it only deal with incoming traffic (unless I specifically give it permission to open a specific port)?

Your router will not prevent applications from dialing out, so a software firewall is still necessary.
