running client-side exe files in IE

Hi. I hope I'm in the right forum.

I want to be able to have someone run a particular (prearranged) EXE file by clicking on a link to <A HREF="file:///C:/whateverfilename"> in a webpage I host.

It used to work in Internet Explorer but now doesn't - security reasons I guess.

It works in Opera, by setting MIME preferences, but I can't seem to find out where to go about (re)setting up IE to do this again.

So any ideas on running EXE files from links in IE. It shouldn't be a security risk if it has been prearranged between me and the viewer.

    Thanks in advance,

    Terry

Wouldn't you just have them add your page to their trusted IE sites in the tools/internet options, security, click trusted sites, click the sites button, and then have them add your site to their trusted list??? That should bypass any security restrictions. But it may not work.

Your site will need to be affixed with a secure layer: https://... if you uncheck the box at the bottom (require server verification) then that bypasses that requirement.
