This is a common problem with win98, I get it all the time... a big problem is the disk cache routine on shutdown. My old HDs fragment very easily and I know its time to do a defrag when I get that error...

So, you can look for a patch for shutdown bug in win98... or Try a defrag and thorough scandisk and try shutting down, else just select Reset then as it boots again, hit the Power button... I use 3rd option

There were a couple of patches for this long ago. Check the windows update website.
Get Quintessential player, the alternative to winamp! ( www.quinnware.com )

Hmmm..yesterday mine was redirecting to the M$ website. I found that amusing. Don't know if it was intentional.

Windows help centre might help you, shutdown problems are notoriously difficult to track down though. Any piece of hardware or software can be the source of your problem - just hold the off button in for 8 seconds.

Also it's very possible that spyware is the problem. If the above responses don't help, just click the spyware removal link in my sig and it will give suggestions of things to try.
