What is application hijacking and is it bad?

I didn't get application hijacking with Zone Alarm. But I am using Sygate now and recently I had a legitimate email from a site like this one to a question I'd posted. When I clicked on the link in the email, Sygate logged it and the log said that my email program had contacted Internet Explorer to connect me to the site.

Seems harmless enough and pretty logical. Is it? Is this just Sygate's thingy or what?

i like sygate much better than zone alarm, it does a good job of logging my internet activity in details so you'd know whats goes in and out of your system accordingly, you can turn off the email notification (under Tool> Option).
