    Crash in audio driver

Occasionally I get a popup saying something about an illegal operation in VIAUDIO.vxd when running a DirectX 8.1 application I'm writing! The sound carries on playing but the app locks up and cannot be terminated even from the task manager.
As a software designer, a driver which is able to crash rather than failing safely is faulty but I don't know if the problem is due solely to the driver or my app. Do sound drivers need updating like video drivers?
The sound device is an onboard Via KT133 AGPset (4-5 years old I believe) and I've never looked for drivers before - all games have worked fine.

    Any advice?

This appears to be the closest match for your motherboard. Hope this helps....
