Ok, I'll take a crack at a components throw down:

    Case + PSU ($28.00):
    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...145-047&DEPA=0
POWMAX Black/Silver Mid Tower ATX Case with 400W Power Supply, Side Window & handle, Model "CP0327PL-4" -RETAIL

    INTEL:
    CPU ($193.00):
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...116-184&depa=1
    Intel LGA 775 Pentium 4 530 3.0 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail

    Motherboard ($179):
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...128-266&depa=0
GIGABYTE "GA-8I925X-G" 925X Chipset Motherboard For Intel LGA 775 CPU -RETAIL

    AMD:
    CPU ($150)
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-499&depa=1
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8GHz, 512KB L2 Cache 939-Pin 64-bit Processor - OEM

    Motherboard ($179)
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...128-279&depa=1
GIGABYTE "GA-K8NU-SLI" NVIDIA nForce4 SLI Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU -RETAIL

    Hard Disk ($99):
Seagate 120GB Barracuda 7200RPM SATA II with NCQ Hard Drive, Model ST3120827AS, OEM
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...148-039&depa=1

(Note: I chose the seagate drive because it has the fastest seek time {8.5sec} and the longest warranty {5 years}. You can get a faster drive like the 10,000 rpm drives from WD, but they are expensive right now and the storage capacities are not as large)

    Memory ($149):
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...141-186&depa=1
    pqi Dual Channel Kit 240-Pin 512MB(256MBx2) DDR2 PC2-5400, Model PQI25400-512DB - Retail

    Video ($188):
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...145-098&depa=1
    Chaintech nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB DDR3, 128-Bit, TV-Out/DVI, PCI-Express, Model "SE6600G" -RETAIL

INTEL PRICE WITH INTEL CPU AND MOTHERBOARD:
    $836 + shipping

AMD PRICE WITH AMD CPU AND MOTHERBOARD:
    $793 + shipping

The Intel system comes out over $36 without shipping. AMD comes under $7 but these prices are without shipping and an Optical drive.

With an optical drive, you'll have to fork out what I have referenced below.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
You'll need an optical drive of some sort. A mouse, Keyboard, and Monitor/Speakers. Those are not within the budget you alotted.

You can add a benQ CDRW for an extra $22.

    Optical Drive ($22):
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...101-629&depa=1
    BenQ - 52x32x52x CD-ReWriter, Model 5232W, Retail

YOu are going to have to increase the budget a bit if you don't want to skimp. I could have went with an AGP based system instead of a PCI-Express system and saved around $100-$200. But regardless, PCI-Express is the future so I chose that platform.

That system EFC posted is worth it.. but it uses some older tech.. 9600XT, DDR not DDR2... agp not PCI express, ATA versus SATA Hard disk, and so on and so fourth, but for the price including free shipping it's a pretty good bargain. It does come with a floppy, Keyboard, mouse, speakers, optical drive, all for $785 with free shipping. BUt compare what I put up and that system and you'll see the difference in specs.

The intel motherboard does. The AMD does not.
