    Home Network Probs

    Ok Network problem (

    Setup

    ADSL 1 meg connection

ADSL Router by mentor. 4 port
    PCs

2 close to router with asus A7N8X Boards one connected with onboard lan, mine is usin a nic card (realtek)

    Both connect fine

Upstairs i have an older setup with a jetway mobo, 128meg sdt 850mhz cpu AMD and a realtec nic same as mine.

    Upstairs is the prob.

Initially it worked and has done but i keep losing the connection and now cant get it back.

Light is green on nic card, no orange activity light.
Router shows 3 lights to show a PC is there altho the light at top doesnt flutter like other 2, i presume this is the activity light. (link/Act).

Lan monitors says Yellow triangle limited or no connectivity.

    Tried net set up wizard
Tried resetin router and going through set up again
Tried the repair operation which just Hangs on "Renewing Your IP Address"
    Then fails.
All are set to gain ip auto and DNS Auto
    Tried removing/changing Firewalls

    All on Win XP SP2.

The connection has worked ok and ive altered nothing.

Ive been away 4 a couple of days now it doesnt work.

    Please help.

I sounds like it is a problem with the computer in question and not the network. So there is no reasion to fool with the network. So first thing to do is to go into the commad prompt of the faulty computer and type
"ping localhost" without qoutes. There are several ways to get inot command prompt go to run and type cmd or go into the start menu/all programs/accessories/command prompt.

if you do not get a responce from localhost that means your network card is not working.

So next thing to do would be to go in to Device Manager. Right-click my computer go to properties at the bottom. Go to hardware tab and then to device manager. Find network adapters. Look at the icon next to the name if it has a red x that could mean there is something wrong with the drivers or the network card has been disabled. Try to enable it first. If that doesn't work roll back the drivers.

    More Info

OK i moved slots and also did ping local host, i recieved a load of info back as below

Pinging s-computer [::1] with 32 bytes of data

    Reply from ::1: time<1ms
    as above
    as above
    as above

    Ping stats
    packets sent =4, lost 0 0% loss
Approx round tip times in ms
    min 0ms max 0ms Average 0ms

I presume this means i dont need a cable.

Ive also noticed, when i boot the PC , th econnection is disabled. When i enable it i get the limited connectivity

    Try

    1) a new network cable on the top computer
    2) switch the cables on the back of the router with a known good working port

If that doesn't work Try switching the NIC cards or go buy one to test out.

I would do as rik said. take the cable and nic that you know work and install it on the pc that is in question and see if you have the same results.

if you got a reply from localhost that means your computer can ping itself. That is very important. That means that the nic is working correctly. That also means the drivers are installed. The things to check are, yes cables, but also to see if your nic has been disabled. Because you can ping localhost while the nic is iinstalled but disabled. So go into device manager and see if there is a little red x next to your nic driver icon. If there is right-click the nic and enable it.

Edit: Actually come to think of it just incase replace the nic with the one from the working computer with the identical nic, but only if all else fails.
