    Is my hard drive dead?

    ok im thinking it is

it started making a funny noise and then locking up in windows or where every it was (scandisk included).
the noise it made was the same noise it made when it first starts up, but it would repeatedly do that noise for a bit then lock up

luckly backed up LOADS of data quick then formated it

now it formated ok but fails writing the boot

did scandisk on it, locks up

Im pretty sure its dead but I was iterested as to why? what is that noise?

Kinda hard to say. You can usually download a diagnostic from the vendors website to run on it.

rik is absolutely right. I will go a step further than him and say that if the drive is making noise it is probably not long for this world. Having said that, I have brought a number of drives back to life using the manufacturers diagnostic software that is available on their website.

The single utility operation that I have had the most success with is writing all zeros to the drive. This operation can take several hours. Once completed the drive is ready for partition, format and os installation.

You can also check drive warranty and arrange for warranty exchange on the manufacturer's website.

Good luck and drop back by and let us know what happened.

Spinrite sometimes saves them but it's only a temporary reprieve. If it is making a klonk it's prbably a gonner.
I'm using Windows 7 - you got a problem with that?

I've got to agree with efc, once the drive starts making noises out of the ordinary it's usually a sign of failure right around the corner.
