    Upgrade TIME!!! ... Advice, please?

Okay, I have PC with windows 98SE on it, it’s a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4, 512mb ram… with a sapphire radeon 9800 pro on it, and I thought, “might as well upgrade to XP”… so I am . But, I have a couple questions ; First off, should I uninstall my soundcard and graphics card drivers? ..And also my firewall and virus stuff before I upgrade? Basically I want to know what programs I should take off… so I don’t get any clashing… or something like that…

Next thing, in a thread “Egghead” mentioned something about the file system “fat32”… on windows 98, etc. I read that there’s file system NTFS which is supposed to be better… so, can I put it to NTFS? How would I do that when I’m upgrading? Does it ask me to make a choice, or do I have to do in the Bios? Anyway, if someone could explain that, I would much appreciate that. I’m not really “smart” with this stuff; so keep that in mind lol

I don't want to do a clean install because I do not want all my stuff erased. And my computer runs smooth.

    Thanks!

It is always better to perform a fresh install when possible. Here is a good article that discusses all of the issues you brought up.

Thanks efc, I'm going to check it out.

edit to add: I read over it, I understand that clean install is better, but I don't want all of my files to be deleted... I have a lot of stuff I want to keep. So, with that in mind, I'm going to take my chances and upgrade.

If you don't reformat before the install you'll run into lots of problems later on.

Save any important files to CD or another disk partition. Boot from the XP CD and choose to format and then choose NTFS as the file format.

Follow efc's guide, it's all there step by step.

I'm probably going to just clean install, I don't want to deal with messing up... I'll live.

if your doing the fresh install i recommend that you first get all the drivers for your motherboard and (important) ethernet card.

I have seen times where someone installs windowsxp saying not to worry that they can get all the drivers frmo the internet after install. well sometimes windows does not have your drivers for ethernet card so now you are stuck with new install and no way to get on the internet.

    better safe than sorry

Cool, did the clean install with no problems... sept all my stuff is gone.

Anyway, I read that upgrading gives problems, so I'm cool with this.
