    little black arrow on icons

I'm wondering why and can I get rid of them. Only some icons have them. When I chose the icon it did not have an arrow.

    Those signify "shortcuts"

IE. Not the actual location of the file but a pointer to the file.

I remember Tweak Utils for windows 98/me let you choose to get rid of them however i am not sure of the XP solution,, tweakxp might do it.

    Thanks

It's funny though, only some of my icons have them - and they are all shortcuts aren't they?

    No,

Certain things like Internet Explorer and the My Documents and general stuff like that will not have a shortcut symbol or perhaps if you have a picture or document saved on your desktop.

If you install a new program sometimes it will ask if you want to put a icon on the desktop... If you say yes you will get a icon that is a shortcut and not the actual file itself

If the file is saved in the location you are looking then it will not have a shortcut symbol.

If the file is located elsewhere on your HD then it will have.

If you right click on a icon with a shortcut symbol and then choose properties you will see the path to the location of the actual file.

    ...

If you email documents to anyone etc.. Dont attach the shortcut icon to the email thinking you have attached the actual file.

Many a time i have recieved emails with documents attached that when i look i see a shortcut instead.

If i clicked on that shortcut then it would not find anything as i dont have the original document on my hard drive.

Hope this makes it clearer or probably i have confused you more

    Thanks

    Richard

I understand. The ones that have the shortcut symbol are "my pictures" and one to my Web-page. If I put "My Pictures" directly on my desk, I cannot change the icon.

"My Pictures" is a Microsoft specific folder and is generally more difficult to modify than a normal folder as it has special magical properties

You can rename your shortcut though so it shouldnt be all that bad

    Thanks
