    Question Video capture card recomendation!!

a friend of mine asked for input on how he could convert vcr tapes to digital format and save them to dvd. He has lots of family videos, so taking it to somewhere to be done it would be quite expensive. I think he needs a video capture card, but since I never had the use for one, I am not too familiar in this area. I was hoping some of you guys have a better idea.
He doesn't want to spend too much money on it.
His PC is a gateway with P4 1.8 Ghz and 512 RDRAM. I am not too sure about the 512, but we talked about upgrading it to 512 6 months ago, so I guess he did upgrade it.
He also is not a computer person, so he needs something easy, which makes it more difficult.
As always any help will be apreciated.

    Anything by Hauppauge should do.

Take a look at that guide. Walks you right through this process.

He'll want to invest in good video editing software is important. I recommend Pinnacle Studio 9.4 if he wants a good balance of features with simplicity of use.

    They have a trial available:

He will want to defrag the HDD, install more than 512MB of ram, and when doing the capturing, turn off all services and unneeded background programs, and don't touch the computer until the capturing is finished.. if not, he will get dropped frames and stuttering in the video.

While he is at it, if he wants to store them in DVD format, might as well invest in WinAVI converter, for converting the files to DVD format and burning. I did this very thing tonight with some footage of my mom. Just finished burning it to DVD. Going to check it out in a minute or so.
