    MSN Messenger

Are there any special anti-virus or anti-spyware or firewall software that I should use if I am using MSN Messenger 7?

I've recently bought a new PC and threw away the old one cos it was so badly infected, partly through MSN.

    Thanks.

You threw away an old PC because of virus/spyware problems? You should have just reformatted the hard disk.

No, not just because of that... I'd had it for seven years. It was old, not much memory, HD was small. So it was an excuse really.

if you use msn messenger you should have anti-virus installed. people can try to send you files that can contain a virus or trojan and messenger should warn you everytime someone sends you a file. messenger cannot tell you if a file is good or bad so it is best to get a real time virus scanner to check the files before you open then.

Also some people or worms will send you a link in messenger that will take you to a website to be infected if you are using a volnerable internet browser.

all in all msn messenger is fairly safe.

yahoo messenger on the other hand is very unsafe.

If you go into the yahoo online chat and create a rukuss to people there you will find that people can cick you out of the chat (called booters) these programs are all over the net and they can do things to crash your computer such as opening and infenite number of warning messages etc......

at one point I recieved a message that XXXXXXX was trying to access my shared folder. very scary. if they can get that far what else could they be doing?

I have also been informed that through the yahoo messenger it has been seen that a trojan can be slipped into the program directory.

    qutoe:
People always boot me from chat
Some people gain pleasure in booting others from chat rooms. Yahoo! Messenger is very vulnerable to certain type of errors, which force it to crash. Chat2.0 and Java chat (http://chat.yahoo.com) are less bootable than Yahoo! Messenger, but many feel that using a 3rd party chat client offers much more reliable

Thanks... I have Norton and AVG anti-virus, Kerio, Ad Aware... so I should be ok then? But I just wanted to know if I needed a special one for usage with Messenger.
