Coal To Oil Using 80 year old German Process
Montana's governor wants to solve America's rising energy costs using a technology discovered in Germany 80 years ago that converts coal into gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel.
The Fischer-Tropsch technology, discovered by German researchers in 1923 and later used by the Nazis to convert coal into wartime fuels, was not economical as long as oil cost less than $30 a barrel.
But with U.S. crude oil now hitting more than double that price, Gov. Brian Schweitzer's plan is getting more attention across the country and some analysts are taking him very seriously.
Montana is "sitting on more energy than they have in the Middle East," Schweitzer told Reuters in an interview this week.

This sounds great as a temporary measure. BUt eventually the coal will run out as well.... We need long term solutions to the energy crisis that is looming. If we maintain our dependency on fossil fuels, we are only extending the end by a few years... Solar, Wind, Hydrogen, etc... these are the future. They need serious R&D and the government should foot the bill. Scale back the military spending, increase education and research spending.. That's what's needed.
WIthout different forms of energy that are sustainable, and easy to use, we'll be screwed.
ANd our planet is taking a pounding for our careless use of gasoline, diesel, etc... take a look at the skyline of LA if you need further proof:
And just to show you LA is not the only one, take a look at Christchurch, NZ:

Hope this works economically. Dont know how long we will last with the stuff we are doing to the world.

Well with oil at $68 dollars a barrel, and this process costing $32 approx., I think it will work economically. The problem I see is this method still relies on a resource that will run out... Hyrogen is one of the most plentiful elements in the universe. The sun won't burn out for another 4 billion years...
