Problem with DVd burner on Emachine PC

Hey guys im having a bit of a problem with a DVd burner i cant sem to figure out.Never seen this error before so hopefully one of you can fill ,me in.I am using Nero 7 Premium edition for burning. The actual copy process seems to work fine up until the point when i insert the blank DVd media.I have tried multiple DVD-R's to rule out that possibility.

The error in question is "illegal disc" i have yet to see this before. The DVd in question is a copy i made of an original DVD.I tried multiple DVD's all ending with the same result so i am leaning towards the possibility that the DVD Rw may be going bad.If any more info is needed let me know.

Is the drive capable of reading -R media or is it a +R drive only? What is the model and have you looked for possible firmware updates?

It's a DVD-/+RW.As for model there isnt a model on the drive since it came with the PC when my freind got it and i havent taken it apart yet.

The funny thing is the drive worked perfectly fine for quite a while since he has had it and just recently started giving this error.Havent checked for firmware updates yet.

This is the one if im not mistaken except his package came with monitor, speakers, ect

This may be the answer, what has he installed recently ? MusicMatch JB or iTunes ? seems to be problems with these and Nero.

Nero Info tool should tell you what brand of DVD drive.

Like FG stated, all the errors that I am finding like this are people using Nero. Not to say that it is the problem but it is very curious.

Indeed it is,I tried upgrading him to nero 7 to see if that would correct the problem (he had nero 6.1) but no change. The thig that gets me is the error says "illegal disc" and i havent seen this error.Usually if the CD or drive is bad i have seen the "session failed" or something along those lines.Perhaps i should try Roxio and see if it will burn using that program.

I was doing some searching today and it seems that having InCD installed with nero can for some reason cause this error.I'm gonna remove it and see if that helps.

An update.Seems the problem was the DVD-R's.It was strange he has like 4 packs of Memorex DVD-R's we tried a few from each pack all leading to the same error.

So then i decided to say the hell with it and tried a veribatim DVD-R.It burned perfectly with no errors.Updated firmware didnt help.Is it possible that his DVD-/+ RW just doesnt like memorex. From what he told me he used FujiFilm and veribatim(sp?) for quite a while and never had a problem burning them.I just find it werid that 4 packs of DVD-R's dont work.never had that issue.

It happens all the time, the various DVD drives have the media they like and hate.

Memorex doesn't make DVD/CD-R media and some of the manufactures it use aren't the best. I bought some Memorex that were real good (Taiyo Yuden, made in Japan) and lynchknot had some but can't find those any more.

I stick with FujiFilm Made in Japan or any brand "Made in Japan" and Verbatim.

Some DVD drives are more picky on DVD-R than they are with DVD+R. I use DVD+R.

Thanks for the reply FG,yeah i know what you mean there.I let him know already to stay away from those 3rd party brands and such and stick with the japan made brands.I've always stuck with fujifilm, verbatim, and on occasion i have used TDK and sony.

Havent tried out using DVD+R media yet.His burner supports it so i will suggest him to give that a test to see if he has better results. But i am still a bit confused.

I know how some drives can be very picky but usually at least in my expierience it usually ends with a coaster. But in his case the DVD doesnt even begin to burn it will record the DVD say insert blank media then right away give that illegal disc error without burning anything at all.Why cant someone make a 100% compatible burner for a change lol.

I have seen more problems out of Memorex and Maxell DVD media in the last year. All I use for mine is Verbatim, and I've had good luck with Imation.

Ok bit of an update,Today i got a call from my freind once again and seems his DVD RW is still giving him issues.I recommended him to grab either FujiFilm or Veribatim DVD-R's both of which we tested the other day and burned with no problems. He told me that he burned a DVD onto a fuji film and it worked fine but then he tried to burn a second copy using the same fujifilm DVD-R's and now he is once again getting the same error.

I havent got a clue now as to what might be going on except perhaps the DVD-/+RW is going up (he used it a lot burned at least 100 DVD's *probally well ovr 100 but im just guessing* and countless CD-R's using it over the course or around 7-8 months) so just wanted any other opinions or suggestions.

Already tried using proven media, updating firmware, checked system for any sort of virus, adware ect.Upgraded Nero and Roxio products and XP SP2 to latest windows updates, removed InCD which was noted to have caused this error using removal tools provided by Nero.Nothing seems to help.formatting is not an option or that would be my next move.I am stumped.

His Roxio programs arent the newest avalible and do not have the option of copying a DVD he uses it mainly for CD burning as a backup in case Nero fails.
