    AVIs crash explorer

Opening any folder containing an AVI, crashes explorer.exe. If it's in thumbnail view, the crash happens immediately. Otherwise, selecting the AVI file would crash explorer. I have Googled, and it seems I'm not the only one, but I can't find a solution.

    BTW, I have up-to-date XP SP2.

    Hey man,
I had this same exact problem a while back.Sadly i was never able to solve it.Ended up formating.I suspect from what i was told here at TZ that some form of codec incompatibility may be the cause.Good luck if you happen to find a solution please let us know.

Can you play AVI files at all?

    Firstly try disabling disabling thumbnails

From any open folder in Windows Explorer and, right click on the background and select View>Icons

Select Tools>Folder Options, in the tasks group select "Use classic folders"

Select the View tab and click on the "Apply to All Folders" button.

    Click Ok.

    Try this registry fix:

Start > Run > type "regedit" (without quotes). OK.

    Navigate to

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTSystemFileAssociations.avishellexPropertyHandler

right click the Default value in the right hand pane and select Delete then close regedit.

Note: backup the registry first before making any changes.

    Thanks to you all.

The registry tweak didn't work even though I rebooted.

But "Use classic folders" did the trick. I figure that explorer.exe crashed when it tried it preview the video. That's why thumbnail view crashed it immediately. And selecting the file caused the crash 'cause it was trying to preview the video in the left column Great!

Glad to hear you got it all sorted out man.Still i wonder exactly what causes these issues. It's very strange to me.For example when i was getting the error it seemed to happen only with AVI's after formatting i still had all the AVI's on my slave hard drive and since then i have not gotten the same problem even with the AVI's which used to cause explorer to crash.
