    Free AV software - AVG?

So I read the excellent post on getting free anti-spyware software. Now what about one for anti-virus - I don't see such a threa and it must get asked all the time.
I've previously used the free AVG version but had problems with its update feature doing crazy things. What good, free software is there that TZ'ers would recommend, and where is it to be found?
Ideally I'd like to be able to have the option to download update files manually so that I can get a non-internet PC with up-to-date AV protection.

    Thanks.

avast! is the best IMO, you can also download the updates for the offline PC.

AntiVir is also very good, but I don't know about the separate update for offline PC ??

The best FREE setup for would be Avast! or AntiVir running as the main resident AV, and BitDefender 8 free as the backup on-demand scanner. BitDefender free doesn't have on-access (realtime) resident scanner.

When you run BitDefender make sure the resident scanners are paused or disabled so no conflicts between the AV's, re-enable the resident when BD scan is done.

Does Avast allow me NOT to run it as a resident app? If I just want the ability to perform scans manually, would BitDefender be the best choice? Can I download its updates manually for my offline PC?

If you're just going to do on-demand scans then BitDefender would be best. Yes you can manually download updates.
