    Do you know which program was used to create the file?

    TUT file is usually a tutorial, try chopping the .tut off and running it as an AVI - there is every chance it is a video tutorial. Unfortunately quite a few programs use the extension so you might need to know which one created it.
    I'm using Windows 7 - you got a problem with that?

    usually download programs add their own extension to signify incomplete such as bt for BitTorrent, or .part for FireFox

    or as Curio eluded too, it could be wrapped from another application such as Tutorials etc
