Hi, I have installed win xp on a new hdd since my mainboard got faulty and i tried to back up all my documents from the old hdd. The problem was that in my documents I had some folders (the documentation of my 4th year project) that was encrypted, so that to prevent anyone from the net to access it. I managed to copy the files but I cant open them. Now the problem got bigger since I cant even move the files from where they are but I can only delete them. Can someone please tell me how to recover the files. Note. I have not copied the certificates. All I have is the certificate thumbnail written in the properties of the file. Thanks

I would log in as an admin and under the security tab take the ownership back to your user id.

if you used xp encryption and you did not back up your certificates than they are lost forever. there are programs that can sniff the certificates from your old hard drive and you may be in luck there
also a glitch allows your files to be decrypted when viewed on the old drive and I heard that it is possible to recover those files using data recovery software

yeah I was thinking if you took away permissions from yourself and locked yourself out of your files. Did some googling and egg's right only 3rd party recovery apps will allow you to recover encrypted files. Guess thats why I never encrypt it.

I have tried to log in as administrator and take ownership but in vain. I have got the certificate thumbnail written next to the owner. I also tried to rename the computer the same as the previous one. I also used the same user name and password but I cant view the files. The name of the file is written in green thats why I think they are encrypted.
