    SP1 update

With Service Pack 1 for Windows XP, Microsoft will introduce additional technological measures aimed at ensuring licensed customers receive full benefits and to make it more difficult for those who pirate software to steal these same benefits.

I'm a little confused with all the info floating around regarding SP1.

There was a leak this morning and everybody is grabbing it (build 1105) Then I hear it's supposed to go "final" like "now". Then I hear it's going to go "gold" in a day or anytime soon.

Do I need this thing? When am I supposed to DL it? I'm not even sure what a "service pack 1" is.

I have all the latest critical updates (I think) already. Why didn't they just include the changes in the updates that I spent time DL-ing in the first place.

I'm back. I've been DL for over 4 hrs. and I have 6 more hrs. left but I might put the brakes on this DL because the site 9down.com had this to say about what i'm DL now.

The windows xp sp1 final internal copy 1106 available to download !

This build also has the (For testing purposes only...........) on the desktop! You can download it now or wait on 9,september internet to upgrade.1105.1 was only built for some languages, indicating it might be RTM for those specific languages. 1106 was also compiled today, which then indicates that MS plans on going on with the english version. 1106 is the rtm (release to manufacturer) code, and so is 1105.1 ... they are just packaged differently. We can expect RTM for oems to be around 1110.

So that being said, if you are looking for 1106 to show up, don't hold your breath. 1106 is an internal build, not packaged for release. Although RTM, it is still being tested. make sense? You ask what then CAN we expect. Well for sure the OEM around build #1110. But if we happen to get our hands on anything else before that we'll be certain to pass it along.
Is that a bad thing? They give no information on version Home or Pro.

    What's "slipstreaming"

Slipstreaming is when you integrate your original xp disk with the new SP1, basically for those that often reformat. It becomes a bit annoying to constantly have to then install the SP over a fresh install all the time. So if you slip stream your SP and xp disk, then you will not then have to reinstall the SP, because your xp copy will already be updated with the SP.
Handy to do with your MS Office disks as well
