Windows Media Player 10 'cannot play file' error

WMP 10 gives me a 'Cannot play file' error (Error ID = 0xC00D1199, Condition ID = 0x00000000) for all media files (mp3, video).

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
I have the divx codec installed and these plugins installed - audioscobbler, lyrics, windows live messenger and nero fast-burning - none of which are enabled.

Have not installed any new software recently. Have tried deleting the library and re-scanning the hard-disk. WMP 10 does not appear to have a repair option.

Also had a problem with FTP surfer (it could not find the program files) and had to reinstall it. May not be related.

Reinstall WMP or install this codec pack: K-Lite Codec Pack

Installed k-lite 3.48 MB codec pack. No luck.

mplayer2.exe doesn't play anything either. Will try reinstalling now.

Reinstalling did not solve the problem.

Neither WMP 9 nor WMP 10 would play any media files.

I also tried changing file associations via mplayer.exe to no effect.

I'm using Winamp 5.3 with the modern Single GUI theme which is a good substitute.
