Dec. 12, 2006 It's cold and flu season and soon the best elixir for combating viruses may not come in a child-proof bottle, but in a paint can.

A new antimicrobial coating, which can be applied like paint to any surface or textile, has been shown to kill many types of human pathogens, including the deadly Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, as well as influenza virus, which kills more than 35,000 Americans each year.

"We found that, depending on what bacteria or virus you work with, we have from a 100- to over a 10,000-fold reduction in bacterial or viral count," said Alexander M. Klibanov professor of chemistry and bioengineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Last night, I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I'll never know.

I sometimes worry about these anti-bacteria fixes... what happens if strains of the bacteria mutate to overcome the preventative measures?

If it saves lifes and is safe I think it's a positive all the way round.
