Probably it's more like a bog than just a sink hole. A bog doesn't let air to the object that's been sucked down, so it won't rust (or decompose for that matter - remember the Bog bodies? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog_body )

Cleaning up or restoring stuff that's been in a bog is a hell of a lot of work. My brother is an instrument mechanic in the army, and he got in some instruments from a Leopard tank that got sunk in a bog.

Even though the instruments were air and gas tight, the bog was everywhere inside them. The pressure in the bog had pushed particles and mud into everything. From what I remembered, the way they got it out was to wait until winter, let the top of the bog freeze, dig off the top layer, let it freeze agian, dig off and so on, until the entire tank was excavated.

pretty cool for sure...the pic egghead posted was of a panzer tank, or panther, it's the same make.

the second tank was of a tiger tank, probably the best tank in the world at that time but it's really heavy (60 tons)...the nazis had problems in russia during the winter months cause that tank was so heavy it kept getting stuck in the mud..

This link indicates the tank to be a Soviet made T-34 that has German markings.

great info Fenalaar. Gee those Bogs sound nasty... are they like quicksand, would the tank crew have time to escape the sinking vehicle?

Actually, I found a mention of the exact same tank on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-34#Surviving_vehicles

It's a T-34 "appropriated" by german troops, used until they ran out of fuel and dumped in the swamp.

Alas for you - no skeletons left in that locker
