Control panel displays as generic icon in explorer
Both on the start menu and in Explorer, the icon for the control panel (imageres.dll, -27) does not display. It's in the registry as default icon for the control panel. It exports as:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\DefaultIcon]
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,69,00,6d,00,\
61,00,67,00,65,00,72,00,65,00,73,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,2c,00,2d,00,32,\
00,37,00,00,00
But in regedit it's a REG_EXPAND_SZ with this data: %SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll,-27
I've tried deleting the icon cache and rebooting, and deleting this registry key and rebooting. And that icon is present in imageres.dll.
This is only for classic view and the startmenu mouseover.

Thought of that -- but no restore points that predate this glitch.

Installed any theme/tweak software or windows updates recently?
Try reinstalling video drivers.

If its a corrupt dll you could try sfc /scannow from Run.

If only 1 icon isn't displaying properly (on mouseover, it displays the first icon in shell32.dll) is reinstalling drivers applicable? And as other icons from imageres.dll display, and when I open imageres in restorator the icon is there, how would that be a corrupt file? OK, stupid question; this is Microsoft we're dealing with.
I still think it's a registry glitch. The most recent installed updates are for junk email, defender, malicious software removal and IE. The only one withknown issues listed in the kb is the last, and that has to do with use of monikers.
Un & reinstalled the video card. Still effed up.

To quote a sig in the vista newsgroups: "Practice makes perfect. Then you reinstall." I did. Am getting EVERYTHING customized, defragged, cleaned up, etc, then creating a restore point and backing up the registry. Beats reinstalling every time I screw something up.
Update: System is now chopped, nosed and detailed and open for business. And I backed up the registry with ERUNT, and posted all my working hacked system files to my GMail drive. And created a restore point.
Kicking and screaming, but I get there.
