I have been playing around with tools from this web site and they seem to work out pretty good.

    http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/mpeg-to-dvd.html
    http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

I also think Nero has an MPEG to DvD conversion tool with that software package.

Well, the thing is, if the file is already an mpeg or mpg etc.. most times it can be burnt using a dvd authoring tool, with no encoding etc... the main issue is the file size, like you can only fit 30min - 1.5 hours or so of recorded shows. So it would be good to re-encode into a smaller size and then onto DVD.

Does DVDShrink, in Full Author mode, do this? like convert the audio from AC.3 to mp3, and video from HDTV resolution down to 350x480 etc ?? Then you could fit a few hours of video and still be fairly watchable.

My typical scenario is: Record HDTV on computer and save file as *.DVRMS (filesize ~3GB per hour or so), then use TSConverter to encode into *.mpg (only saves a couple hundred MB) which i can then burn to DVD using Sonic MyDVD authoring tool. But I only get just over 1 hour of video

    Hey Egg,
I am not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but from what i saw in your link looks close to it.I do alot of the same things you are trying to do with the end result being moving files to DVD.I use a few programs together to do it as i havent found any all in one apps out there yet.The main two being TMPGEnc and DVDLab pro 2.

    http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/dvdlabpro.html
It has built in tools for shrinking down your MPEG files to fit on a DVD as well as everthing you need to make menu's and all the extra's.Been using this for a while now and havent found anything better yet so maybe it's some use to you.
