    HP Laptop DVD-ROM - Issues/Replacement?

I have a laptop here that an elderly customer no longer wants. Well, he shoved the remote for the DVD-ROM in the PCMCIA slot...UGH! Well, we used some dental tools and were able to fix the slot....

However, the DVD-ROM is the issue with this particular model. This is an HP Pavillion Laptop DV-8000. The DVD-ROM won't read DVD's....I read that there is an issue with this particular drive, however, I can't find firmware to fix it. We did a destructive format on this laptop for him because he had it all screwed up to be damned. However, the DVD-ROM did not work before that either, which is one of the many reasons why he called for repair. After doing some reading, this LG DVD-ROM is defective.

We want to replace it but don't want to replace it with the same thing....what would you suggest??? What am I able to replace it with? Not sure of the models and if they interchange or what? This gentleman got pissed off and bought a new one and asked us to sell this for him....can't do get a good price without a working drive for it.

Thanks in advance to the almighty tech gods!

It's dpubtful you will find a firmware update for that sort of drive.I had the same issue with a Matshita drive in my toshiba laptop and to this day could not find firmware to fix the issue of it only writing to DVD at 2.4X when it's an 8X burner.I ended up simply replacing it with a NEC drive. If i were you i would remove the DVD drive from the laptop to get the demensions of the drive and see if it has a normal IDE interface or a adapter like some laptops do.More then likely it will be standard and you can just get a replacement on newegg.

The model is an LG GSA-4084N

You can get the firmware at this link: http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GSA4084N

If the firmware doesn't fix it you could replace it with one of these. (they should all fit, but obviously double check with the retailer first).

Instructions for replacing the drive here.
