My Desktop INI files are corrupt

I ran combofix. It corrupted my Desktop INI files in my folders.
I can not see the images and folders in some of my folders.

Tuneup Utilities says that I do not have icons in my c:\Windows\system32\imageres.dll file.

I can not put a new Imageres.dll file in my vista OS.

It says I am not authorised to change files, but I only have 1 user account.

    It is an administrative account.

I replaced some of the DESKTOP INI files, but it does not work in some folders.

When I click VIEW and a different thumbnail size, it works.

I already tried a System Restore, an sfc /scannow and a chck Disk, to no avail.

    Advice?

    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to run an OS repair by booting to the Vista cd and following the prompts.

    Thanks for replying rik.

When I try a vista repair, it just lets me do a 'system restore' or a reformat.

I read that one can do a vista OS repair as an upgrade or through an upgrade. I read that it may not work.

Well depending on the amount of corruption, nothing may work. Unfortunately when dealing with the OS...and I assume a virus of some kind per your post of having to run "Combofix", nothing is guaranteed. I am surprised tho that it doesn't give a repair option like XP did. I don't have a Vista machine so nothing to test it on. Sorry.

Maybe one of our Vista "Gurus" will show up and lend a hand.

I do not think there was a lot of corruption.

I did not have a virus after all.

The lack of a repair option is why I dislike Vista.

    Thanks for replying Rik.

    Thanks for replying Conan.

The repair option is to do a System Restore or fix the memory or fix the part that boots the PC, only.

Most annoying thing in Vista no repair option - but if the system boots you can do an upgrade - same thing.
I'm using Windows 7 - you got a problem with that?

it took me 5 hours to repair through an upgrade. It did not fix everything. Then I had to get the updates. Then I had to reset the settings. After 8 hours I still had things to do on it.

    Thank you all for replying.

I feel for you Veronica but at least you were not one of the unfortunate souls affected by the Vista Black Screen of Death. There are apparently several different scenarios in which you boot only to a black screen with a movable cursor (all boot options end same way). I have seen a few of these and as you cannot boot from CD and do a repair install with vista it means you are in backup/wipe/reload land. There are some fixes around but only for certain problems which have not corresponded to the ones I have come across.
