    PC Performing Very Slow

I was wanting to increase the performance of my sisters rather old PC, it is an Athlon 1470MHz with 256mb of RAM running Windows XP, it has become very slow, opening any app can take several minutes an example would be opening a Word doc which can take 3 to 4 mins, I can increase the Ram size but are there any other areas I should be looking at that is making the PC so very slow?

have you tried cleaning out the temp files using CCLeaner. run malwarebytes to scan for bugs. defrag and scan disk your hard drives. that would be a good start.

If your sister has a legit copy of XP, I would consider a clean install.

If that is not the case, I would download and install AVG, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D and install them. Then run scans with each. I would wager that you will find dozens, if not hundreds of items during the Ad-Aware scan that are slowing this computer to a crawl.

I know, some will say use a different product. We all have our favorites.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, the hard drive is only a year old and the PC did come with a official copy of XP, I will run the app's mentioned here next time I am there, it would be interesting what they find otherwise a a clean install of XP would be an idea.

And as you already know... add more memory. It can't hurt.
