Samsung Electronics Co. today announced what it's calling the world's highest-density hard disk drive for desktop systems.

The 3.5-in EcoGreen F4, or 4FEG, offers up to 2TB capacity in three 667GB platters. Samsung said the platters can store up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 MP3 songs.

The internal F4EG drive offers better performance, lower power consumption and better reliability than older EcoGreen hard drives.

For example, Samsung's previous EcoGreen F3 hard drive also offered 2TB capacity -- but on four 500GB platters. The three-disk F4EG improves standby performance by 19% and uses 23% less power in standby mode than the F3EG, the company added.
