Nintendo's new handheld, the 3DS doesn't hit stores in the U.S. until March 27. But it's already been released, sold out and hacked over in Japan.

Numerous reports out of Japan say that the mobile gaming unit has already mostly sold out the 400,000 units Nintendo originally shipped in Japan, and that the handheld was already hacked by gamers who wanted to play their older Nintendo handhelds. According to PC World, the hackers believe that Nintendo will likely block their ability to do this with a firmware update.

According to Kotaku, the most popular game on release day was Professor Layton and The Mask of the Miracle. Eight games launched with the 3DS in Japan -- the U.S. launch will have 18 games.
