It appears the Nintendo 3DS is off to a strong start at retail.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Nintendo says day-one sales of the 3DS in the United States were "the highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history."

Nintendo did not provide specific sales figures, adding more would be made public on April 14, when market research firm NPD Group unveils first-week sales of the 3DS.

"Nintendo worked hard to get as much product as possible to retailers on day one to meet demand, and we will continue with these efforts moving forward," reads the company's statement.

This follows comments from a GameStop representative in this Gamespot article saying the video game retailer was "very pleased" with consumer response to the 3DS, which launched on Sunday.
