Seagate has upgraded its hybrid drive technology for laptops with a new-generation product claimed to be 70 per cent faster than the original and up to three times faster than a traditional hard drive.

The Momentus XT offers 750GB of storage in a hybrid configuration, meaning that it includes flash chips to offer the high storage capacity of a conventional disk and the blazing fast read performance of an SSD.

The updated Momentus drive includes 8GB of Single Level Cell Nand flash with double the read-write speed of that used in existing drives, according to Seagate.

The drive also features Seagate's flash-assisted storage technologies to allow faster boot times and optimise the way flash is used to boost the performance of the disk.

This includes Adaptive Memory technology which moves the most frequently accessed data to the SSD, providing faster access.
