    XP Sudden Reboot

Here's an interesting one that just started occuring two days ago. Whenever I power on my XP machine (corp edition, no SP), when I click on the START button, XP reboots without warning . During this sudden reboot, it will scan (in this order) the c:\, then e:\, then back to c:\. After it is finished, I can log in and I get the wonderful "Send Error Report" message. Another interesting point is that my ZoneAlarm seems to reset on which apps I allow access to the internet for (coincidence? Possibly). Anyone see anything like this before? Also, anyone know how to view the .dmp files that the error report wants to send? I would like to troubleshoot this but unfortunately, Win XP removed the wonderful GPF error that kinda pointed you in the direction to take

You might consider a system restore to 2 or 3 days ago and see if that helps. Did you install anything new prior to the first time it happened?

If it continues, right click "My Computer"-->Advanced tab-->Startup and Recovery Settings-->untick "Automatically restart". Next time it happens, it should give you an error code (something like 0x0000...etc.). Post that number and any text with it and we can go from there.

Otherwise, a format and clean install may be in order.

A friend mentioned the Win XP auto reboot option today, so I will have to wait till I get home to disable it. Once I do, I will post the error here.

    Recent changes:
Update Nero from 5.5.9.7 to 5.5.9.14
Updated the Nero InCD application (can't remember the version offhand)
Installed the Belarc Advisor for a sytem info (http://www.belarc.com/free_dowload.html)

I haven't performed a rollback yet because the problem began to irratate me at 12:30A (the fight between becoming caffienated and sleep was won by sleep) . So I was going to try it this afternoon.

    As for the:
a format and clean install may be in order.
I was hoping that Win XP solved this feature of Win 98SE

    about the system restore...

I've heard good and bad regarding it...although I haven't done much installing the past couple days, what else would it affect (i.e. just touches system files, everything, somethings, etc...)?

SAM hives (does not restore passwords)
WPA settings (Windows authentication information is not restored)
Specific directories/files listed in the Monitored File Extensions list in the System Restore section of the Platform SDK
Any file with an extension not listed as <included> in the Monitored File Extensions list in the System Restore section of the Platform SDK

COOL!!! I still will hold this off for my second to last resort. I wanna figure out what caused it so I don't do it again. I'll probably start with uninstalling the burn applications and testing from there. Thanks for the KB article...It will help tremendously.

No prob. When/if you get an error code, post it in this thread and we'll see what we can do.

Exactly. Just have to scare your machine every once in a while. As a last resort, find a baseball bat and violently bash your computer.

I finally got not one, but two wonderful stop errors this evening (computer was making up for lost time )..both occured from a symevent.sys. I only wrote down the first because by the second one, the baseball bat crossed my mind...following error...

"a stop error has occured blah blah blah. The file that appears the cause is: SYMEVENTS.SYS

    PAGE_FAULT_IN NON_PAGED_AREA

    Lotsa blah's (about two paragraphs)

    STOP: 0X00000050 (0X8B6EBAD8, 0X00000000, 0XF6AA3ECC, 0X00000000)
