Microsoft has announced a new storage option for its cloud platform SkyDrive, with users able to purchase a whopping 200GB of storage for $100 a year.

The firm made the announcement alongside the unveiling of its new Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2 tablets on Monday night, with anyone buying these devices receiving the 200GB storage offer free for two years.

Writing in a blog post, Microsoft’s principal group program manager for SkyDrive.com Omar Shahine said that the offer would also help those who are fully committed to cloud storage to remove any worries about data allowances.

“We didn’t want you to worry about filling up your hard drive, so we invented smart files to allow you to access your entire SkyDrive from your device, without actually having to store everything locally. However, the number and size of these files also keeps growing and growing,” he wrote.

“So we also want to make sure that your total SkyDrive storage space can keep growing in parallel. So today, we are happy to introduce a new storage option to add 200GB of additional storage to your SkyDrive for $100 per year.”
