Samsung will release the Galaxy Note 8 in the second half of 2017, according to reports.

Some reports had suggested that following the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, which saw the handset discontinued after reports of it setting on fire and burning arse, that Samsung would bin the Note brand altogether.

But according to an 'official in the electronics industry' that this week told Business Korea that the Galaxy Note 8 will arrive later this year.

"The Galaxy Note 7 was very popular before user reports began circulating about devices that exploded or caught on fire while charging," the anonymous source said.

"As the phablet market, which was developed by Samsung Electronics, has been growing, the company will release the Note series this year again.

Samsung has yet to comment on this latest report but dropped a big hint at a Galaxy Note comeback with the promise that that burned Note 7 users in Korea would be able to bag themselves a half-price Galaxy Note 8 this year.

Another insider, this time from a partner company of Samsung's, has also revealed some details about the upcoming smartphone, saying that it'll be the first to offer a 4K-resolution display.

"Samsung will introduce 2K resolution displays in the Galaxy S8, but it will use 4K resolution displays in the Galaxy Note 8 to realise improved virtual reality (VR) functions. I heard that it will connect with new Gear VR wearable," they said.

This isn't all we know about the so-called Note 8, as there's also talk that it will come with souped-up iris scanning technology and Samsung's upcoming artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Bizby, that's expected to debut on the Galaxy S8 in April.
