    Get Rid Of Msn Autosearch

"Many people have probably noticed that MSN and hotmail have started popup ads, or at least increased their frequency. In its own right, this is rather annoying, but today it went overboard. I went to enter a URL in the address bar and missed a letter. As usual, Internet Explorer (6.0) launched the typical search on the MSN Web site. The MSN search page popped up an advertisement. I know I can install popup stoppers, disable scripts, etc., but then I feel like I have lost a part of the Internet. This, on the other hand, was too intrusive. Just because I mistype a URL doesn't give Microsoft the right to give me an advertisement. I would definitely not miss this 'feature,' so I went in search of a way to disable Autosearch from the address bar. I'm sure many of your users already know this tip or know a better way of doing it, but this is what I found. There was a Customize button which appeared in the search area. This brought up a 'Customize Search Settings' dialog. At the bottom of the dialog, there's a button called 'Autosearch settings.' This seemed like the place to go. Under the 'When searching:' drop-down I was able to select 'Do not search from the Address bar.' This setting has now disabled the Autosearch feature from the address bar and has increased by browsing speed when I accidentally mistype a URL."
THis from the lockergnome. Very interesting and it works!

i FOUND A easier way to do this.
Go to IE, tools, internet options, advanced, search from address bar, put a check in the box that says "Do not search from the address bar"

I havent managed to find one yet, was running Guard IE but only a trial version which has since run out. Also tried POW, ISmasher, Proxomitron and Xenobar all not that bad. Im trying to find a freeware prog thats similar to Guard IE since thats the best Ive tried so far. Im never going to pay for a pop up stopper program cause I think they all should be free.
I will let you know if I come across anything thats really impressive

    Webwasher

    Zero, try this one out:

    http://www.webwasher.com/en/products...wnload_win.htm

Download the Beta version, it works well with XP. It's what I use, and so far it's able to stop all the horrid pop-ups of Cracks AM.

While not neccesarily a popup stopper but more an ad blanker

    It is very effective

Update your hosts file using this comprehensive list

    http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html

And then install Edexter <- link on site above

The hosts file blocks all servers mentioned while edexter replaces the "file not found" error you cause with a nice blank image or one of your choice.

Essentially by adding sites to your hosts file you tell the computer to check itself for the site and when it doesnt find it it errors.

Post if you have any questions

    Thanks

Old , but very nice trick Richard
although i like the "Meaya" better
i've been using that for about 7 months now and i love it.. doesn't even allow the popup to pass through and you don't need to struggle to close the new windows it starts up
    best program out there.. http://www.meaya.com

The main problem with pop up stoppers is that they can also block legitimate popups.

I know you can add a "trust" relationship to them but it is a pain

Plus, while ads are a nuisance I am quite happy for some ads to appear and using the hosts file lets me choose exactly which ad sources i want to reject plus it is also a good way to prevent access to certain sites. (good child lock)

I also dont mind a popup occuring so long as its is blank as sometimes preventing the actual popup happening stops the web page from working

Anyways, This is my preference and doesnt have to be yours but i might give that meyae thing a go

    Thanks

    Richard
