    Question Class not registered???????

    Hey guys.......

Trying to play a long awaited moooooovie for my mother (she's very into horror)

    "Don't Look In The Basement" - 1973

Media player gives me an error "class not registered"
I click on help........it tells me there is none!?

Any ideas? Any other good players besides WMP and DivX?

I've downloaded every darn codec I can imagine from p2p buddies......also tried DivX......only plays for about 2 mins on that one. Fresh out of ideas......

    Thanks,
    Sharon

Looks like you may have a part or corrupt download. Was it from *cough* Kazaa?? *cough*

Try this small program called DivFix which can scan the file and detect any errors:

    About DivFix
This program was created to be able to watch partially downloaded DivX (AVI) movies.
It can rebuild or strip the index part of the movie, which is at the end of the file.
There are also a basic error detection, which can detect serious errors in the audio/video stream.

    View:DivFix homepage

    Download:DivFix 1.10

also make sure you have the latest version of DivX:DivX (5.0.5)

    Much obliged!

Nope Rev, it was from, ah, er, winmx. Which by the way is getting almost as bad as Kazaa. Five times Nortons caught and killed viruses attempting to come in.

It is good to be protected.........

    Thanks a mill.......I'll give this a try!

    No dice, but great tool!

Well, I downloaded the DivFix program........great one!

Unfortunately, it didn't help it run any longer than 5 mins. I think you are right.......this one is corrupt or reported wrong in length or something. Thanks for the link, I will make great use of that program in the future! WinMx, while slower than some, remains the best p2p program I've used yet. I do have to say that (and I may get bashed on this) that I did write to them and ask them to put a filter in the new version for slower connections. That those people who perhaps can't afford cable or dsl or may not have it available in their area yet, should be downloading from "like" connections. Call me selfish and impatient..........

Oh well, I am on the search for another copy from someone else......hopefully it will work. At 65 years old, my mother is simply facinated with the fact that you can download something and transfer it to the big screen.......and all without commercials! She's something!

    Thanks again!

    Sharon

    hold on!

    don't delete it just yet!

    try virtualdub.

Run it through this program to see if it loads.

    http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

If it loads and plays through the player let us know and we will inform you how to save the file again without re-encoding and play in your normal player.

    What about the file size?
Does it looks like a complete movie?
Then it might just be that WMP doesn't recognize the right codec. I have that problem a lot in my PC.
When that happens I use Wimamp 3 to watch the movies. I like WMP controls, but when it fails Winamp doesn't.
You can also use another player like Zoomplayer
and make sure that you install the necesary codecs

she says the movie plays for 5 minutes so it can't be a codec problem,

it is most likely a corrupt download.
virtualdub should be able to repair the file for use or give an exact error message.

I use emule for sharing "Family Home Videos" and it works great.. seldom get file corruptions. My family can view my home videos and download them directly from me, as the file generates a code that is specific to my movies.. and only my movies. So no virus or anything..
and during the download if it does become corrupted, emule redownloads the corrupted parts on the fly...

You might want to consider emule.. but it is much slower on average than kazaa or WInmx... but then you are not wasting your time downloaded corruptions and virii either

there is one trick to stopping that egghead,
simply remove any and all files from your shared folder, and then set the files that you are downloading in the shared folder to VERY Low priority.

    Works for me anyway :P

You can also restrict the upload speed to 10, since after 10 the download speed can go to maximun, instead of using the credit system

That's a good tip along with keeping your shared folder empty.

restricting the upload speed also restricted my download speed.

I even tried a bandwidth limiter and to fool the mule.
I set it to 0 and limited my uploads to 10k and my downloads went from 20k to 6 in a second.

i uploaded 3 gig of the same litttle part of my file i wanted and after 3-4 days i got the file and closed the mule and will not use it for a while.

The only way I know how to limit it,
is to put a really crap file in the incoming shared directory.
    Set it's priority to release,
then set all the other files you are downloading at the moment to very low priority,
and then move the files out of incoming as you download them. You still are going to upload, but it shouldn't be that much..

And the best kinds of files to upload are like foreign language programs, media, etc...

Free operating systems like Linux, and so on.
