Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE support ends January 16, 2004

In case anyone is keeping track.

Microsoft will offer paid-incident support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) through January 16, 2004. Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE downloads for existing security issues will continue to be available through regular assisted-support channels at no charge during this time. Customers can request Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE fixes for new security issues, and these requests will be reviewed. Fixes for any new security issues can be specifically requested through regular assisted-support channels. Web-based self-help support will be available for at least one year after assisted support ends. Mainstream support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE ended on June 30, 2002. No-charge incident support and extended hotfix support end on June 30, 2003.

98 has had a long life. Great OS indeed. We still use it at work, and probably will for 2-3 more years.

    Good ridance I say

Never had much luck with Win98...and too many re-installs to count.

I do miss those lightning-quick shutdowns though

In all the time I used 98 and 98se, the only time I had issues were when I installed new 3rd party software like Norton Systemworks, Zone Alarm and so on. It ran well, but it did leak the system resources.

It had some HDD limitations and ram limitations that were not a problem back when it was first release, but have become a problem due to the nature that hard has improved so much.

98 had limited driver support at first, USB was even an addon that you had to update to be able to use USB devices.

I still use it daily at work and seldom have problems. It runs well, is great on older hardware, and does what it needs to do. Not to say I would use it at home... I won't.

I am sure this will effect some people, but for the majority, the support will be had in forums like techzonez.
