Question Windows XP services not starting

I was trying to fix remotely my cousin computer (With some helpful help from Stripe) and I noticed that a lot of the services aren't starting correctly. This services include but are not limited to:
    Workstation
    Server
I believe RPC (thought by the time I connected it was working obviously)
    Windows Audio
And A LOT MORE that were automatic, but were not started.
I thought you guys might have encountered something similar, or might know why this happened, and how I can fix it.
I was going to suggest doing a repair with the Windows CD (They tried already a system restore), but I don't remember how to do it. (I never had to do it. LUCKY!!)
Still, I don't have much explanations about the why and how, so I am hoping some opinions rom you guys would give me some light

Those two services are running on my system. I turn off every one that I read that can be safely turned off, so suspect they are needed.

Have you tried to turn them back on?

another simple way is to put the windows cd in and boot from it, choose repair and it should bring you into a C:\windows prompt...here you type chkdsk /r...this will do a check on the drive for any potential problems then repair any files that may be problem children...once completed reboot and you should be back into windows. just remember to change your boot sequence back when your done.
