It says that windows cannot send admin alerts unless alerter service is started. I don't see any "alerter" service in services.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. It should be the first one in the list "Alerter".

What have you changed to your OS lately? What have you installed/uninstalled? I am sure whatever you did it caused the change. Just undo whatever you did, if you can. Try the repair again. See if it works. If not, you're on the road to reformat city. If you created an backup, you could restore your OS in minutes.

well, it repaired anyway but I still don't have alerter service. I even ran sfc/scannow and found no files missing.

Just a thought but it would probably be a good idea to look for any other missing services before installing too much new software. Run services.msc then open the help file and index to 'defaults, services settings'.

Try this from the Run Command: C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalService

What exactly does the error related to the Alerter service say? and are there any other alerts in the event log that sound related to this problem?

The 'Alerter' service is simply a service that can be used to report errors to Admin if you on a Domain and the 'Computer Browser' service is for browsing for other network workstations, so if your not too worried about either of these two things it shouldn't really be much trouble to you.

I thought that alerter was needed when turning off automatic restarts.
