Apple unveils iPhone 11

Sep 10, 2019 - 6:24 PM - by Reverend
Apple officially unveiled its new iPhone 11 lineup at a closely watched media event at its Cupertino, California, headquarters on Tuesday. The updated iPhone features new wide and ultra-wide cameras as well as an anodized glass design.

The company also unveiled a new seventh generation iPad at the event Tuesday, with a larger 10.2-inch retina display and a price tag starting at $329. The previous model had a 9.7-inch screen. And it announced the Apple Watch Series 5, an updated version of its smartwatch with an always-on display. With this feature, the watch face is always visible, rather than requiring the user to raise his or her wrist.

The Series 5 watch starts at $399, or $499 with cellular. The Series 3, an earlier version, will now retail for just $199.

Apple kicked off the event by focusing on its premium subscription services, a product area it is increasingly betting on to grow revenue and offset sales declines in its core iPhone business.

Apple unveiled pricing and additional details for Apple Arcade, its gaming subscription product, and Apple TV+, a new streaming service for original shows and movies. Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ will each cost $4.99 a month.

At a time when some of its competitors are launching innovative but riskier concepts, such as Samsung's foldable smartphone and its two 5G devices, Apple is expected to stay the course. That, too, may be risky. The iPhone business — still Apple's single biggest moneymaker — has been lackluster at best of late. Revenue from iPhone sales has declined by double-digit percentages in recent quarters.

EA Launches Surprise Cloud Gaming Trial With Four Games

Sep 10, 2019 - 6:19 PM - by Reverend
EA has announced its Cloud Gaming Technical Trial that will allow fans to test out EA's cloud technology with such titles as FIFA 19, Titanfall 2, Need for Speed Rivals, and Unravel.

EA's chief technology officer Ken Moss took to Medium to discuss EA's biggest public-facing step towards a cloud-based future since its announcement of Project Atlas last year, and fans can sign up now for a chance to try it out for themselves.

This test's main purpose is to "gather more inputs at scale to test performance and quality of service in a variety of network conditions and on multiple server routing scenarios." This test will be focused on cloud gaming on PC, but EA's goal is to allow gamers to play anywhere and on any device they choose.

EA wants to ensure "that there is strong quality of service in cloud gaming by being able to adjust to real-world, often less than ideal, conditions such as unstable bandwidth and network strength." Is utilizing Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the public cloud so it can "deploy as close to the players as possible, even in the face of unstable networks and changes in bandwidth."

The four games chosen for this trial - FIFA 19, Titanfall 2, Need for Speed Rivals, and Unravel, were picked so EA can test many different genres of game to ensure gamers get the best performance possible when/if EA's cloud service becomes a full-fledged service.

Furthermore, EA will be testing the "technical functionality of cross play" that will allow players to play together no matter what device they are using. Additionally, the goal is to ensure cross save will be implemented as well.

Moss states that cloud gaming is just "one part of our broader vision for how cloud will shape the future of gaming," and that "these continued investments in cloud, distributed computing, AI, social features, and engines will redefine the... [Read More]

Google removes 24 more malware-filled apps that amassed 500,000 downloads

Sep 10, 2019 - 6:15 PM - by Reverend
The Google Play Store is having a tough time at the moment with malware-filled apps and sketchy developer practices. Google has again removed 24 more malware-heavy apps from the Google Play Store with almost 500,000 downloads as it tackles the problem on its online app marketplace.

We’ve seen numerous developers and applications already ripped from the Play Store after questionable ad practices and sketchy software runs without owner knowledge after being downloaded. This latest crop of apps was found by cybersecurity firm CSIS Security Group.

The research shows that the “Joker” malware within these infected apps was able to secretly sign people up to premium subscription services, steal SMS messages, contacts, and even nab key device information such as the serial and IMEI numbers.

This trojan was also able to silently click on ads while simultaneously accessing any verification codes sent via SMS — which was used to sign up for these premium subscriptions.

CSIS found 24 Android apps that were littered with the malware. The full list can be found below:

Advocate Wallpaper
Age Face
Altar Message
Antivirus Security — Security Scan
Beach Camera
Board picture editing
Certain Wallpaper
Climate SMS
Collate Face Scanner

The report also states that the malware-infected apps only attacks those in selected countries. You would have to be using an active SIM from one of 37 nations. The full list of 37 targeted countries is:... [Read More]
