YouTube is rolling out its Instagram-like Stories feature to more creators

Nov 29, 2018 - 8:46 PM - by Reverend
YouTube is expanding its Instagram-like Stories capability to more creators today, giving those with more than 10,000 subscribers the chance to use the tool.

There are some major differences between Instagram Stories and YouTube’s iteration of the feature. YouTube Stories last for seven days on the mobile app, they will appear for both subscribers and non-subscribers, and they’ll show up in YouTube’s “Up Next” sidebar beside a video. Creators who use the tool will be able to respond to fans who interact with their stories, and creator responses will be seen by anyone who comes across the story. Fans can leave comments or questions on stories, and creators can publicly address each response.

The focus for YouTube Stories, which was first announced in November 2017, seems to be on community engagement and channel promotion more than day-to-day life updates. Creators can show behind-the-scenes snippets of videos being made, for example, or tease upcoming collaborations.

Although YouTube tested the feature with a few channels earlier this year, the rollout to those essentially within YouTube’s Partner Program means YouTube Stories may start appearing more often on the homepage for mobile users. People on Reddit have discovered the upcoming change and have expressed mixed reactions about Stories on the platform. One user suggested that YouTube needs to focus on fixing its ongoing issues, including demonetization problems and advertising concerns, before rolling out bonus features.
"Even creators like Philip DeFranco have expressed some concern about Stories"

“The death of YouTube is finally coming to light,” one Reddit user wrote on a thread about the feature. “If they stop copying other social media and keep/support all of the old features (i.e. annotation) there is still a chance they will keep users.”

Valve Discontinues Steam Link Hardware

Nov 21, 2018 - 11:15 AM - by Reverend
Valve has decided to stop offering the Steam Link hardware as an option and with it removed one of the easiest ways to stream your Steam games wirelessly or wired to a TV in another room.

The announcement was made on Steam yesterday, with stock of the Steam Link hardware already sold out across Europe and almost sold out in the US. Once they are all gone Valve will continue to support the hardware, but also the software version. It's possible to get versions of Steam Link for smartphones, tablets, and televisions without the need for dedicated hardware.

When the Steam Link device first appeared in Nov. 2015, it offered an easy solution for streaming games from a PC to a TV. Simply hook the Steam Link up to a TV in your home and then load the game on your PC. Your home network was then used to stream the game to the television, with the best experience gained through using a wired connection.

The box ran a modified version of Linux and offered compatibility with the Steam Controller as well as the Xbox 360 wireless and wired, Xbox One wired, DualShock 4, and Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710. Unsupported controllers that worked with the Steam Link included the DualShock 3, Xbox One wireless, Wii U Pro Controller, Nvidia Shield Controller, and the Switch Pro Controller.

Valve launched the Steam Link app for Android and iOS back in May this year. It allows your Steam games to be streamed to smartphones and tablets, but also smart TVs that support apps. However, Apple rejected the Steam Link app on iOS as it violated guidelines relating to user-generated content, in-app purchases, and content codes to name but a few.

Fake Google Android driving apps claim half a million victims

Nov 21, 2018 - 11:11 AM - by Reverend
Over half a million Google Android users have downloaded a set of driving apps with absolutely no legitimate functions.

According to ESET security researcher Lukas Stefanko, the apps, published by a developer under the name Luiz O Pinto, account for at least 560,000 installs.

There are 13 applications in total, all of which relate to driving simulation in some way.

The Android apps include a truck cargo simulator, luxury car driving, motocross, and fire truck simulations, some of which displayed with very similar graphics to alternative, legitimate applications.

Once installed, the apps demonstrate no legitimate functionality. Instead, the apps hide themselves and their shortcut icons, requesting that the user download and install an additional .APK at the same time.

If consent is granted, the app then displays ads without permission when the mobile device is unlocked. Some previous users have reported that the apps also caused severe device slowdown.

The apps were reported and at the time of writing, appear to have been removed from the Google Play Store.

Alexa can now make Skype calls

Nov 19, 2018 - 9:21 PM - by Reverend
Starting this week, you'll be able to make Skype calls on your Alexa devices. Basically the entire line of Echo devices will have the ability to make voice calls via Microsoft's VoIP platform. The Echo Show and its tablet-style screen will also be able to make and receive video calls.

In addition to calling your Skype contacts via Alexa, users will also be able to call mobile numbers and landlines using SkypeOut. The feature allows you to call existing contacts or a new number on Skype. You'll get 100 minutes of free calls per month for two months when you link your Skype account with Alexa.

In order to set up Skype for Alexa, open the Amazon Alexa app on your Android or iOS device. Go to Settings > Communication > Skype. You'll be prompted to login with your Microsoft account. Once you've successfully entered your username and password, you'll be able to make and accept calls from Skype through Alexa.

The integration of Skype and Alexa, which was promised earlier this year, is just the latest example of Amazon and Microsoft teaming up. The companies announced a partnership last year to make Alexa and Microsoft's voice assistant Cortona work together and earlier this year, Xbox One and Windows 10 got Alexa apps.

Firefox to Display Warning if You Visit a Site That's Been Breached

Nov 16, 2018 - 9:46 PM - by Reverend
The Firefox browser will soon issue a warning if you visit a site that recently suffered a data breach.

The warnings will appear on Firefox's desktop browser as pop-up notifications that tell you how many accounts were compromised in the breach.

The same pop-up will show you a link to Firefox Monitor, a free service that lets you check whether any of your internet accounts were ensnared in a data breach. Simply click the link and type in your email address to view whether your accounts were hit.

The new function will roll out to Firefox in the coming weeks, at a time when users are demanding more security and privacy features, Mozilla said. "Data breaches are common for online services," company privacy engineer Luke Crouch wrote in a blog post. "Some online services discover, mitigate, and disclose breaches quickly. Others go undetected for years." Making matters worse is that most people simply don't know that a breach has affected them, he added.

The pop-up warnings from Firefox will hopefully change this. It'll also give users a chance to secure their affected accounts—before hackers have a chance to take advantage of the situation. For instance, when a breach occurs, you should change the password on the affected account and enable two-factor authentication if available.

It's also good idea to make sure all your internet accounts are secured with unique passwords. Hackers like to check whether their victims re-used any exposed passwords on other internet accounts.

Mozilla built its notification system using data from security researcher Troy Hunt, who maintains an active library of all the latest data breaches at Haveibeenpawned. His site also lets you type in your email address to check whether it's been affected in a data breach.

So how often will you see these alerts from Firefox? "This alert will appear at most once per site and... [Read More]

Microsoft is said to be building an Xbox with no disc drive

Nov 16, 2018 - 9:41 PM - by Reverend
When Microsoft launched the Xbox One, it banked hard on the idea that gamers would favor digital content over physical discs -- a gamble it had to backtrack on almost immediately after the console was announced. Now, according to a new report from Thurrott, the company may be revisiting the idea of a digital-focused game console.

Specifically, Thurrott claims that people familiar with Microsoft plans say that the company is planning to release an Xbox console without a disc drive.

Thurott's Brad Sams says that the console is basically an Xbox One S with the optical drive removed -- a change designed to bring the Xbox One hardware's price to the lowest point possible. The final unit is expected to cost $200 or less.

Already have a collection of disc-based Xbox One games? Sams says that won't be a problem. Alongside the new console, Microsoft is said to be launching a "disc-to-digital" program that will allow players to trade in their discs at select stores for digital codes.

If that sounds familiar, it's probably because it's somewhat similar to the game-licensing strategy Microsoft originally planned for the Xbox One -- a DRM-heavy system that made every physical game disc a one-time-use redemption key for digital games. Microsoft reversed that policy following public backlash.

On top of this rumored discless console, Thurrott also reports that Microsoft will release a revised Xbox One S console that retains the disc drive but still has a lower cost.

Neither console is confirmed to exist, but if Thurrott's sources are right, we should hear about them soon: the sans-disc Xbox is reportedly targeting a spring 2019 launch.
