Microsoft delivers emergency security update for antiquated IE

Sep 28, 2019 - 10:33 AM - by Reverend
Microsoft on Monday released an emergency security update to patch a vulnerability in Internet Explorer (IE), the legacy browser predominantly used by commercial customers.

The flaw, which was reported to Microsoft by Clement Lecigne, a security engineer with Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG), has already been exploited by attackers, making it a classic "zero-day," a vulnerability actively in use before a patch is in place.

In the security bulletin that accompanied the release of the IE patch, Microsoft labeled the bug a remote code vulnerability, meaning that a hacker could, by exploiting the bug, introduce malicious code into the browser. Remote code vulnerabilities, also called remote code execution, or RCE, flaws, are among the most serious. That seriousness, as well as the fact that criminals are already leveraging the vulnerability, was reflected in Microsoft's decision to go "out of band," or off the usual patching cycle, to plug the hole.

Traditionally, Microsoft delivers its security updates on the second Tuesday of each month, the so-called "Patch Tuesday." The next such date will be Oct. 8, or in two weeks.

"In a web-based attack scenario, an attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit the vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website, for example, by sending an email," Microsoft wrote in the bulletin.

The bug is in IE's scripting engine, Microsoft said, but did not elaborate.

Microsoft posted security updates for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2, and Windows 2008 and 2008 R2. All still-supported versions of IE were patched, including IE9, IE10 and the dominant IE11.

YouTube Music will replace Play Music as a pre-installed app in Android 10

Sep 28, 2019 - 10:28 AM - by Reverend
It has been more than a year since Google revamped its music and video offerings with the YouTube brand front and center. The company signaled that YouTube Music would eventually replace Play Music, and it's moving one step closer to making that a reality. Devices that ship with Android 10 will no longer have the Play Music app pre-installed. Instead, they'll have YouTube Music.

You can, of course, go to the Play Store and install the YouTube Music app right now. Android 10 saves you the trouble, though. If you're still using Play Music, you can go to the store to grab that app on Android 10... at least for now. Google intends to retire the Play Music app eventually, but it's promised to bring YouTube Music to parity with Play Music before killing the older service.

Making YouTube Music the default music app on Android is a big step. A lot of people will just start using YouTube Music because it's in the Google folder on the home screen. However, it still lacks many of Play Music's most popular features like uploaded music libraries. Hopefully, Google gets around to that before it pulls the plug on Play Music.

Google Chrome is getting way better tab management soon

Sep 20, 2019 - 2:59 PM - by Reverend
If you’re a Chrome user who likes to have 50 tabs open at a time, Google is making things way easier soon. Tab management in Chrome currently requires you to hover over each tab and wait for a description of the tab or to simply spot one visually via the tiny favicon. This can be difficult when you’ve got a lot of tabs open, so Google is addressing it with a new preview that will allow you to hover over tabs quickly to get to the right one.

Other browsers have been managing this better for years, including Microsoft Edge and Apple’s Safari, but it’s good to see Chrome getting some improvements. At first, it will be limited to just previews of the page titles, but Google promises Chrome will support a full thumbnail of the tab soon.

Alongside the tab changes, Google is also planning to tweak the Chrome address bar to show results faster. You’ll get instant answers for queries about weather, translations, sports events, and more. Google is also adding in more color customizations for Chrome themes. A new tool will let you change the color of the entire browser and the new tab page, all without having to install Chrome themes from the Chrome web store.

It’s not clear exactly when all of these changes will be available, but Google says they’re rolling out “later in the fall.”
