Huawei's P30 flagship now has a launch date

Feb 19, 2019 - 5:37 PM - by Reverend
Huawei has officially announced the launch date and place for its P30 flagship phone: March 26, Paris.

The event was announced on Twitter with the tagline, "Rules were made to be rewritten."

The short video accompanying the announcement indicates the P30 will have enhanced zoom capabilities, which is unsurprising given that the P20 was the first phone with three rear cameras and one of the best cameraphones around.

Previous rumors said that Huawei's new flagship will come in two flavors: P30 and P30 Pro, both with a "waterdrop" notch for the selfie camera and Huawei's Kirin 980 chip. The phones will have three/four rear cameras, respectively.

It's worth noting that Huawei has an event scheduled on Feb. 24 in Barcelona, where it is likely to show its 5G, foldable phone. And while the company will probably launch more than one device in Barcelona, we now know that the P30 won't be one of them.

You may want to hold off buying a 5G phone until 2020

Feb 19, 2019 - 5:33 PM - by Reverend
We know that 5G will officially launch in 2019, but the first 5G phones to hit the market this year could be quickly outshone by 5G devices launched towards the end of 2019 and into 2020.

Smartphone chipset maker Qualcomm has announced its second generation 5G modem, the Snapdragon X55, which it claims is the world's first capable of 7Gbps.

What does that mean for you? Even faster internet speeds, allowing you to download movies, apps, TV shows, games and music in seconds, although you're unlikely to see that top-end 7Gbps speed instantly as networks continue to develop their 5G experience.

However, the more exciting feature of the X55 is its flexibility. Whereas Qualcomm's first 5G modem (the Snapdragon X50) was developed with smartphones in mind, the Snapdragon X55 is designed to work in pretty much any application.

That means we could see the second generation 5G modem make its way into a host of phones, Wi-Fi hotspots, laptops, tablets, autos, IoT devices and more - helping the premise of 5G being something that can connect far more items than just phones and tablets.

The Snapdragon X55 is also the first modem to support standalone 5G networks, allowing your phone to carry out all its tasks over the speedy connection.

Most 5G phones which arrive in 2019 and use the X50 or rival modems will be non-standalone, where they connect to both the 5G and 4G connections, with the former used for data and the latter for the phone's main connection to the network.

The X55 also supports virtually any band in any region around the world, which means manufacturers shouldn't have to produce different variants for different regions to cope with specific network demands.

Qualcomm expects the first Snapdragon X55 devices to hit the market before the end of the year - so we could see it feature in handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 or Google Pixel 4, but... [Read More]

Microsoft starts testing a version of Windows 10 it won’t release until 2020

Feb 15, 2019 - 9:26 PM - by Reverend
Microsoft has started testing an update to Windows 10 that it plans to release in 2020. It’s unusual for the company to test updates so far in advance, as Microsoft typically releases two updates per year and tests them with members of the public. Microsoft has not yet started testing its next 2019 update, codenamed 19H2, but Microsoft’s Windows Insider chief, Dona Sarkar, says additional testing is required for this new 2020 update.

Due in the first half of 2020, and codenamed 20H1, Sarkar says “some things we are working on in 20H1 require a longer lead time.” Microsoft has not yet officially unveiled features for this update, but the company has released the first early beta build of it to testers today. Windows 10 build 18836 has been released to testers who opt into the Skip Ahead ring for future versions of Windows, and Microsoft will start testing its 19H2 update later this spring.

Microsoft is currently in the process of finalizing its next major Windows 10 update, due in April. It’s currently codenamed 19H1, and the software maker is expected to ship a final version of it to testers in March before making it more broadly available to existing machines. This spring 2019 update will include a new light theme, Kaomoji support, a separation of Cortana from Windows search, and a new built-in Office app.

Instagram Tests Direct Messages on the Web

Feb 13, 2019 - 5:14 PM - by Reverend
Instagram is still a mobile-focused product; it's been slow to add much functionality to Instagram.com, beyond allowing people to view photos and stories. But it's reportedly now testing web-based direct messaging.

As TechCrunch reports, Jane Manchun Wong—who regularly digs into apps to find upcoming changes—discovered that Instagram is playing around with messaging on the mobile web and the desktop.

It's not available to users at this point; Instagram employees are still testing it internally, TechCrunch says. A few hours after her initial tweets, meanwhile, Wong said Instagram had "remotely disabled access to Direct on Web prototype."

The move isn't too much of a surprise. In fact, you might question why it took this long. Facebook-owned WhatsApp has been available on the web since 2015, while Facebook chat started on the web before moving to mobile and then the standalone Facebook Messenger app. In 2017, there were rumors that Instagram was testing a standalone Direct messing app, but that never came to fruition.

Facebook is also thinking about merging its messaging platforms—Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram—to better compete with rivals.

Right now, the web version of Instagram does not support uploading photos or stories, and Instagram has said that it has "no plans to let users upload photos or stories from the desktop," The Verge reports.
