sorry Lynch, havent had this error before, I did have a sticking Power Switch that kept resetting the computer. LOL
So how do you get PC running if it "crashes without fail on reboot every single time" ? :rolleyes:Quote:

When does it crash ? on mem count ? will it boot into bios without crashing ? does it crash when Windows starts loading ?
Have you run memtest 86 to check your ram ? Are you trying your funny OC'n stuff again ?
Check all the capacitors on the MB and make sure none are swollen or leaking.
Use one of your monitoring programs and tell us what your voltages are.
Can you post a little more info on the exact STOP error code?
That should help to narrow it down as it seems there may be lots of different causes...
or as an after thought, once you do get into Windows you can use MSCONFIG to call all startups and non-MS services and reboot. See what that does...
I first tried stopping all startups but still got this crash:After explorer crashes, it runs fine until the next boot. Nothing is OC.Quote:
instruction at "0x734301d5" referenced memory at "0x734301d5" memory could not be read.
Windbond DR. voltage:

Fastgame, explorer crashes with error message and taskbar disapppearing but comes back on it's own. It crashes as things are loading in sys tray but still crashed when I disabled startup items.
**edit:
disable services but MS = crash
disable ALL services = crash
Same in safe mode?
are you unchecking everything in msconfig>>>start up then rebooting. when did it start happening and what has changed since.
I don't know when it started because i've been running my PC 24/7 without any crashes (only crash on restart).
Does not crash in safe mode Rik.
msconfig:
startup off - crash
services except MS - crash
serveice and MS - crash
I have not done all at the same time. I will try that now.
1.) Try running sfc /scannow from Start > Run to see if any files are corrupted. (leave a space between sfc and / )
If that doesn't fix it try the following.
2.)How many sticks of RAM are you using?
If you're using more than one, remove a stick and power up.If you still get a crash, replace the stick and remove the next one.Continue removing/replacing sticks until you no longer get the crash.
Will running sfc /scannow turn up my modified shell32 and cpl files as corrupt?
I'm using 2 sticks of 512 - would I not get a crash if memory is bad while running 24/7 as opposed to just restarting? It runs fine as long as I don't reboot.
*edit - scannow wants to replace my shell32 files.
It will probably replace them, but thats a small price to pay if it fixes your problem. ;)Quote:

Remove one stick and see if the problem is fixed. If not, then replace it and remove the other stick.
Faulty RAM can run perfectly whilst the machine is running, but every time you reboot or shutdown, the RAM has to write the cache back to the HDD.It may be that your RAM is not releasing the data, hence the crashes.
Does the fact that it does not crash in safe mode indicate the ram is ok? hehe, i'm just trying to avoid going inside. I guess i'll have to anyway - it's the lesser of the two.
working in safe mode is a good indication of a system device driver error.
This can be related to any drivers installed that are not M$ certified.
You should check the start up folder in your "documents and settings" folder to make sure everything on startup is disabled.
I tend to think it is a simple driver error/
only because you can run safely in safe mode and all drivers are disabled.
I only have two items in startup folder. Coolmon and fastnet99 and they were disabled with msconfig.
any shortcut in the startup folder will still run as far as know
am I wrong?
I'll rename or remove the startup folder temporarily this time then.
I removed one stick of ram at a time and inserted one stick at a time rebooting between each - still crashes.
You can also get to a boot menu and try the "Last Known Good" configuration. And yeah since safe mode works fine it's probably somethin screwy with a driver...
yes..you are wrong :)Quote:

J/K if it's disabled via MSCONFIG it won't start...UNLESS...somethings making a call straight from the registry.
I disabled all startup and all services and renamed startup folder to xstartup - crash. :(
*edit-
last known good = crash.
Have you run sfc /scannow yet, like i suggested earlier ?
not yet reverend. I've got some things i'm working on right now.
damn...and I know you don't use it but now would be a good time for system restore...
You might wanna installed the stable windows millenium for those projects that need to be completed reliably...Quote:

hehe
j/k
i still think its a driver issue and before you try system restore or even last known config that worked you will need to move any downloaded programs to 'My documents" folder so you don't loose all the .exe's
If it's a driver issue, is scannow useless? How do I find out which driver is causing the problem.
How far back do I go with sys restore? Also, I do have that Drive Image sitting in Drive D partition.
With a system restore I would just go back the least amount possible to a point just before it began. You can always choose to go further if needed and you can undo the restores.
That's the problem. I have no idea when it began. I have been running this pc 24/7. I would rather find the driver/whatever that is causing the problem.
Another interesting thing is: any of you remember that my using "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop would not work? Well, it still does not but the other user account works.
Ok Reverend, after installing these files (most up to date mac transformation system files): http://aquaxp.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2897&hl= - I ran SFC /Scannow and it is not asking for CD at all. In fact I can even tell if it's running. Is that normal? Will scannow show up in taskmanager?
since the game won't run i say uninstal the ati drivers and everrrthing ati related
install the video as a standard video card using microsofts drivers ansd start there bud
Hey Santa did you go down the wrong chimney ? the game thing is another thread...:pQuote:

:D
Uninstalled drivers for the hell of it - still crashes
Lynch, just for the hey of it unplug your cable modem and try restarting your system. And also with the cable modem unplugged try running sfc /scannow and see if it helps.:D
Ok. I unplugged cable, rebooted - crash. Explorer restarts - cable still off, run scannow - nothing, no dialog - not asking for CD - nothing.
I'd say it might be related to that apple transformation pack... but that is just a guess.
If SFC /Scannow doesn't work... then something is genuinely screwed with your PC.
Try a sys restore if you haven't already.
Check in the administrative tools, event viewer...
What are some of the errors it has logged??? Post them in here. That will help deduce the problem more efficiently.
Try the Registry Mechanic and fix any broken registry entries:
http://www.clean-registry.com/registry-mechanic.html
I'd try uninstalling any non-essential items, like that transformation pack, AV, any other programs you have installed in the last couple of weeks..
After each uninstall, try rebooting.. It will be a long and tedious process, but eventually you should be able to pinpoint it.
How did you run SFC /SCANNOW ??
Did you click start,
Click Run
Type CMD
Then type
SFC /SCANNOW
?
Or did you skip the CMD part?
You could try an XP repair using the CD... but I'd wait on that until you exhaust all other options.
Also LK did you mention that it only happens in 1 user acct?
Try:
1. Run Registry Mechanic, RegScrubXP or Regclean. Run several times. With Regclean, it sometimes takes additional runs to find all the problems.
2. Since Explorer was the program identified in the error message, I would reinstall it.
3. Cross your fingers and reboot.:D
The apple transformation pack was installed after the exporer crashing. I now ran repair but the screen is stuck on the Windows XP loading screen (the black screen with the loading gif) I'm going to run repair again.
well lynch looks like its time to practice your formatting skills again.
Nope. I refuse to reformat. I do have an image of C with drive image if repair does not work. I can still boot to safe mode at this time.
Does anyone know why it's getting stuck loading windows? I ran repair again but it won't go.
