Time for a reformat. :D
Reformat? I don't even have the disk - just some HP recovery partition (laptop).
seems I'm not alone. I found this:

Raising my RAM voltage solved the problem for me.
What type of video and what media player is crashing ?
update your video drivers.
You might want to repack the video bearings. :D
WTF are video bearings?
Vista is very susceptible to Driver issues...
Definitely upgrade everything... i'm talking BIOS, DirectX (August/Nov Update), Audio, Video etc...
I installed new vid card and then got stuck with continuous loop BSOD!! Not good i couldn't get into SafeMode!
Also, what type of video you watching, ensure your codecs are uptodate.
Oh! Cojones!

I know you were joking - it's getting old though!
The thread I found about the ram voltage said it was in bios.
I just got another crash viewing a you tube video.
All media players crash vista (VLC, media player classic)\
I'm not sure how to read event log in vista but these errors were under Window logs>Application

I don't know why Nero was mentioned because I was not using it.Quote:

UG, I have the same problem, however I have both Vista and XP on the same machine and both crash when I watch videos. XP however does it less often. I narrowed down the culprit to Nvidia, but in my case I don't know if it is the motherboard (I have a 780i) or the video cards (8800GT x2).
As far as I know, the 650, 680, 750 and 780 chipsets from Nvidia had lots of problems. I am waiting for prices to go down before I upgrade to a 790 which is much more stable (and DDR3).
Updating drivers for both (chipset and video) reduced the amount and crashes, and I have been working with almost no crashes for 5 months. The other thing that I realized, is that it crashes when I load more than one video, so for example, if I have a playlist, when after the second video it might crash in the middle of the second, or third. To solve that I use Windows Media Player classic, and I close the software before I open a new file. (WMPC opens really quick)
I don't have a graphics card. This is just a basic HP laptop with Vista.
However, I do have a bunch of updates at windows update
Yes, you do. Check device manager. It's under display adapters. Open its properties sheet and select check for updates.
And install the windows updates.
FG does it tend to crash with certain files. (avi, xvid, dvix) could be a corrupt codec. might want to try and re-install the codec pack.
My display adaptor is 356MB of shared (mobile intel 965 express chipset family)
I never installed a codec pack. I have installed real alternative and whatever came with VLC.
I use CCCP codec pack (comunity codec pack), and never had problems with it. Give it a go.
the 965 chipset can also be updated from the intel web site.
Update*****
The Nvidia update that enabled Physics engine and the multi monitor on SLI actually removed 90% of the crashes.
So always update drivers first.
