lost ability to hide icons by right clicking and choosing, "Hide icons on desktop" (it's no longer on the list) Does anyone know how to get it back? Thanks.
Try this:
Right click the desktop, click arrange icons by, then click the check next to show desktop icons. Make sure there is no check next to it.
That should make the icons disappear.
:D
I noticed once (a while ago) when unchecking [i]Show desktop items[/], that the desktop picture quality would decrease. I was using the Windows XP background that comes with Windows.
Anyone else share a similar experience?
That's what I meant - "show desktop icons" is missing.

Time for a reformat?:p
Lynch,
I think many of some of these problems can be attributed to the skins you use. Try it with the default skin and see if it comes back.
:D Just an idea.
I tried XP and Classic - still missing that option. :(
could be that active desktop has been shut off some how in XP:
Note (Windows XP): Active desktop functionality is enabled for you by default. Therefore you will not find any Activate/Deactivate button in Active Desktop Calendar. There is a checkbox named "Use active desktop" instead. Enable it if you want your Active Desktop Calendar to use active desktop functionality. By the way, to access your Windows XP active desktop options open Control Panel / Display / Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop and select Web tab.
Check that you dont have it turned off..
Also check to see that LOCK DESKTOP is not checked under that web tab as well..
Other than that, I don't know. I'd chance to say it is some tweak or customization that has removed that function..
reformat? :P
looks like your time has come LK ;) :pQuote:

I really don't like the suggestion of reformatting as the answer to all problems - sure it will fix the problem, but it's like having a faulty spark plug (or whatever) and saying, "replace the whole motor".
There are other options - like I installed Desksweeper that removes all icons - including recycle bin from the desk with one click - but there should be a fix like a registry entry that will put back the option in the right click menu - like the reg entry that adds send-to and move-to.
If I find anything I'll let you know lynch.
I take it that system restore didn't work ?
Looks like Desksweeper took away your options. Anything in it's help file or on the site to restore things?
Even though I removed all but the latest restore points, I still had several days available - but did not work.
I installed Desksweeper because I could not hide icons. :)
Sometimes "reformat" is the only answer!:pQuote:

Especially on a Windows machine :rolleyes:Quote:

Well losing that ability hardly warrants a reformat. That would be like replacing an entire car door because the lock doesn't work.
Someone suggested I look at this reg key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Under that I found this:

He suggested that I backup and delete the entry - all it fine now!!!!! :D
Good job LK, might I suggest that before you do any tweaking or changes in the future that you back up your registry before hand. Makes things easier to fix ;)
BTW as long as it took you to find the fix you could have formated 4 times...hehe J/K :)
Sure, i could have formatted 4 times but it would take me a week to return my desk and apps/settings/games to normal.
Time to crack open that copy of Ghost and put it to use :p
Break out the champaine!!!
Lynchknot you are becoming an experiemced user and you have taught us all something new!
very few people are able to track down a cure for something this difficult and i am glad to say that you have graduated to the next level!
can we get Microsoft to email Lynchknot a beta version of Longhorne?
hehe - as much as i'd like to take credit, I cannot. All I did was insist there must be a registry cure and put the word out. Luckily, someone with vastly more knowledge than I responded.
The question now is what did you do that changed the default NoActiveDesktop binary data.It wouldn't have changed values by itself.
Its good that you found a fix,but its even better if you can work out why the problem arose in the first place.
That's the step that prevent's it from happening again :)Quote:

Probably some tweak app - too lazy to look through right now.
Well, hopefully for your next trick, someone will have a registry cure for it as well. :assshake:
Also, make sure to increase the size of your system restore back to above 1GB. So you can have the option of undoing anything you ever happen to do, that cannot be fixed with a simple registry edit.
:D
