Your file associations are buggered up. Can you associate .reg files directly with regedit? If so, double clicking should merge the file.
Double clicking only opens up notepad.
If you go to Folder Options in the Tools Menu, then Click on File Types cant you specify what happens to a .reg file? (see attached)Quote:

Sorry for being a little ambiguous but I'm not infront of an XP machine right now.
Thanks SupaStar, that worked :)
Kick ass :D
still have the open with problem though - :(
Which open with problem?
I've not paid much attention to registry entries for some time but didn't it used to be that you could set it to open in Notepad when double clicking and still have the right click option to Merge?
A safety feature of sorts if you set it that way so that you don't double click and enter something you may not want.
It seems it doesn't work that way any more. hmmmmm:confused:
Try this registry fix for restoring "Open With"
Thanks Thor. The "open with" menu selection is present but it still does not call up any dialog. I click on it and nothing happens.
Did you apply the reg fix?
Do a reboot after applying the fix for it to take effect.
yes and I did reboot. No change.
Go to Start/Run/regedit. HKey_Classes_Root/*/OpenWithList
Do you have anything listed in the right hand panel?
Actually do you have anything in the left hand side after you expand OpenWithList?
Do you have this reg entry ?
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With]
@="{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}"
yes FG
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Applictions and look for "NoOpenWith" when you highlight any of the Open With List under Applications. If you have that entry then delete it. That entry will be in many of the Applications there and so will "No StartPage. Right now just look for those 6 entries you listed.
Mine looks exactly like yours.
Go to the same place, look at Notepad.exe and see if if says NoOpenWith.
no it does not.
Well guy........I'm at a loss right now. Everything seems to be as it should and still no go.
Even right clicking an AVI and "open with" does not call up the dialog.
Forget about right clicking for the moment.
What happens when you double click any file ??
It sounds to me like you have been enabling the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" option, and therefore most of your file types already have a file association, thats why you don't get the "open with" dialog box.
Well, i'm able to open a AVI file by double clicking - but used to have to option to be able to choose what I want to open it with by right clickiing. This uxl file is not registered and I see this by double clicking and no dialog at all with right click "open with"

*edit - "open with" did work for opening a .js file and some other files I don't normally use.
You need to open Windows explorer, and check file associations.
Tools > Folder options > file types tab.
Just remember not all "file associations" are registered. You will normally have to set them back to default or unknown to get the "open with" box back. The reason you get the "open with" option with those files is because you haven't set a file association for them. ;)Quote:

I have set .js script to open with notepad but I still get other options if I right click.
With files like AVI I do not have the options. I have reset it to open with WMP but stilll should have the option to open it with other players as well.
I have always had the options before - no matter what file type it was - windows would say something like "unknown file type" and would ask me what to do - but does not anymore.
Are you running any tweak programs, like TweakXP,etc ??
You may have enabled something in one of those applications that is overriding the standard XP settings.
I have not run any tweak programs lately but noticed some changes after trying to play "funny" movies that would crash explorer.
It might be related to all the graphic modifications you use like themes, skins, etc. Try using XP's default skin/theme.
I have no idea about your problem. But it seems that you have a LOT of this menu problems. I have a user that works with graphics programs and she always have strange problems, like loosing the file associations and so.
It might be that the graphics programs can break havoc????
Just a thought.
I always thought that user was too stupid to own a PC :p, but Lynch is already a power user, so that is not the case with him.
Just lose thoughts
Well, I don't see how a 3rd party theme could affect the right click menu. I went back to windows classic anyway and right clicked an AVI and chose "open with" and it still won't open any dialog.
I never had this problem before - until the trouble with movies. Those movies crashed my pc so "hard" that my video driver disappeared when I rebooted (computer froze so I had to hit reset). I had to reinstall drivers.
