Sony Finally Solves the PS4 Game Version Confusion on PS5

Last month, it was discovered that some Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War owners were playing the PS4 version of the game on their PS5 by mistake. It wasn't their fault, and Sony has finally fixed the problem in its latest update.

The problem occurred because opting to download all content for Call of Duty on PS5 meant the PS4 version of the game was downloaded, too. Then, for some unknown reason, the PS5 could default to loading the PS4 version without telling the player. As VGC reports, that can no longer happen unless the player allows it to.

If the PS5 detects a PS4 version of a game being loaded it will now pop-up a notification titled "Confirm game version," which explains, "You're about to play the PS4 version of this game. Do you want to switch to the PS5 version?" The option to switch is then offered and triggered with a button press.

It should put an end to accidentally loading the wrong version of a game, but really this shouldn't be allowed to happen either by Sony or third-party publishers. If a PS5 version of a game exists, it's that version which should be downloaded and installed on Sony's latest console.
