    i figured it out-

zone alarm version 5.0 *** screwed it up. i uninstalled it and put in the latest version as Conan noted v 5.1 was later.

    thanks conan

post script- after i updated to version 5.1 xx and temporarily i had no icon problems. but after one day, i was once again missing icons in the system tray. so, i have to log off and log in and then everthing works as normal.

but this also means a nice new reformat and start all over again. <sign and laugh>
